A good strategy I used my first time through, and I recommend to everyone, is to mine crystarium. This way you can make certain you are fully developed in all three of your major classes before you start the next stage.

Expansion to Stage 9 will occur just before the end of Chapter 11 - when you win the "big" boss battle for the Chapter. You don't have to move on at that point though.
